More realistic proportions and an elegant simplicity to them. They are sort of the exact opposite of the old Rackham over the top philosophy. The dwarves are especially nice. I wanted to paint on up and the WAMP contest offered the perfect opportunity. One thing to be aware of is the scale, they are true 28mm, which feels very small if you've been working on 'heroic' scale miniatures.
I experimented with a couple of things on this one, like the fabric texturing and the snow. The fabric texturing worked pretty well I think, but the base looked pretty cool before the snow, and less so afterwards. The face on this particular sculpt was not as great as some of the other in the line, it lacked a little bit of definition and I had trouble with it. The texturing on the fur part of the cloak, the mail and the sword were all nicely sculpted and I'm pretty happy with the result." };

Some of their stuff pushes the envelope but it's the pieces like this, different takes on old stereotypes, that I like the best. There's a lot of detail on these pieces and they're generally well cast. For this one I imagined her stepping off a worn out hunting lodge in a Serengeti type landscape. After finishing I can sort of see why, this is a deceptively complex figure. There's a lot going on and I spent a bit of time before painting to get a color scheme down so I didn't end up with something too busy. The painting went pretty quick, for me. The base is sculpted from Aves Apoxie sculpt and is meant to be the statue he is standing on in the artwork on the cover of the army book. Most people paint things they think are cool, or they are useful in a particular game. Every now and then maybe they find something that has some sort of emotional connection for them. For me, the 'Sad Girl' piece was one of those. I bought it a long time ago and didn't know what to do with it, but I had an idea about a small diorama. I wanted to show why she was protecting her children, so she had to be surrounded by a bad situation and preferably one that could be linked to the ignorance and fear of those around her. For some reason I kept thinking about my wife, and how protective she is of our kids. It was inspiration of a sort.
So I had the basic idea and the motivation came in the form of the Crystal Brush. I went through the bits I had and tried about seven variations before I settled on the ones I used. In addition to the two little ones she was holding, there was one caught in a cavern underneath her. A rat on the other side of the cavern has torn off a leg and carried it off.
Another one is belly down on a platform and the thread that he is made of is being unwound by the machine. The thread is actually a hair from my wife. I could have taken one from her brush but it was more fun to pull it out. :)
The last one is slowing being ripped apart by another contraption made up of chains attached to its arms and legs. I had a test dummy that I painted about 50 times, but aside from getting some of the basic color choices down I couldn't nail it. For one thing I was trying to do a weathered metallic look with real metallic paint and it looked good, but not competition good. I must have painted that damn mask at least 20 times and was literally close to throwing him across the room. The sword was another problem. I wanted it to look like the tentacles but also had to be metallic looking. The suckers on the bottom were my attempt at that. I was congratulating myself on taking a weekend and finishing it up on Sunday night when I realized that the French GD had been that weekend. I could have just hopped across the channel and seen it. Oh well- my stupid. Anyway, I got some great advice on the painting from a few folks, Todd Swanson, Seb Archer and Mike Stubbs, but as these things go I ran out of time and didn't get to implement a lot of their good suggestions. So I entered him in Baltimore 2008 and received an honorable mention. It was a fair judgment of the piece, it still needed a lot of work so I got back to it and completely repainted the red armor, most of the steel and gold NMM and almost all the scratches and weathering was re-worked. I also added more plants to the base and popped it onto one of my own turned wooden bases. It's a bit busy but had used it more as a learning piece so there's lots of activity going on there. Future ones will be a little simpler. I took it up to Toronto this year and won gold in the toughest 40k category I've seen. I consider myself very lucky. This was my first real conversion work, I redid the neck, right arm, some of the shields and decorations and of course the head was from another miniature from the Mordheim range. I sculpted the hair and a few other details too. When my ceiling collapsed the miniature was broken badly and I had to resculpt the nose, arm, hair, and part of the horse. I do love the idea behind this piece though, it's one of my favorites." };
